Faith for the Week: Run With Patience
The Bridge - Faith for the Week is a moment to pause, reflect, and receive encouragement grounded in God’s Word for the days ahead.
Scripture (ASV)
“Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” - Hebrews 12:1 (ASV)
Reflection
This month has been about strength, where it comes from and how it gets renewed. This week looks at what that strength is actually for. Not a single burst of it. A race, run at a pace you can sustain.
The verse asks for two different things to be set down. One is sin, which is straightforward, it needs to go. The other is weight, which is different and easier to miss. A weight isn’t necessarily wrong in itself. It’s something you’ve been carrying that’s too heavy for the distance in front of you, grief you never gave yourself permission to feel, or a standard you’re holding yourself to that nobody actually asked you to meet.
Patience gets treated like a virtue you either have or don’t, but the word here is closer to endurance, staying under pressure without quitting. That’s not the same as sprinting. Sprinting burns through everything you have in the first mile. Patience paces itself because it knows the distance is real.
There’s something else worth noticing before the running even starts. The verse says you’re surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, people who ran this same race and finished. That’s not pressure being added to your shoulders. It’s company on a road you might have thought you were walking alone.
Application
Name one thing you’ve been carrying that was never actually required of you. Consider what it would look like to set it down before you run the next stretch.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the people who ran before me and finished, and for the company that means I’m not carrying this by myself. Show me what I’ve been holding that You never asked me to hold. Give me the patience to run at a pace that lasts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Whatever pace this week requires of you, you were never meant to run it alone.
