Reflection
Moses isn’t warning Israel about hard times here. He’s warning them about good times. Not the wilderness, where they had nothing and had to trust God for daily bread. He’s warning them about what happens later, once they’re settled, once the houses are built and the flocks have multiplied.
That’s a strange place to put a warning. You’d expect the danger to be in the hunger. But Moses says the real danger shows up when you’re full. When everything is going well, and you’ve worked hard for it, and it’s easy to look around at what you’ve built and forget that any of it came from somewhere outside yourself.
He names the exact sentence that shows up in a heart that’s forgotten God: “My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.” That sentence doesn’t deny God exists. It just quietly moves Him out of the story.
This is why Week 1’s forgetting and this kind of forgetting are two different problems wearing the same name. In Week 1, we forget because we’re busy and life moves fast. Here, we forget because we’re comfortable, and comfort has a way of making a person feel self-sufficient.
Application
Look at something good in your life right now, something you worked for and are proud of, and say out loud where it actually came from.
Prayer
Father, when things are going well, don’t let me forget it was You who gave me the power to build any of it. Keep my heart from quietly writing You out of the story of my own life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
