Faith for the Week: The Day of Small Things

Faith for the Week: The Day of Small Things
Bridging The Gaps Ministry

Faith for the Week is a moment to pause, reflect, and receive encouragement grounded in God’s Word for the days ahead.

Zechariah 4:10 (ASV)

“For who hath despised the day of small things? for these seven shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel; these are the eyes of Jehovah, which run to and fro through the whole earth.”

Reflection

To feel this verse, it helps to know what was happening. God’s people had come home from exile and started rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem. The first temple, the one Solomon built, had been full of cedar and gold. Now all they had was a foundation.

Ezra 3 describes the day that foundation was laid. Many of the people shouted for joy, but the old men who had seen the first house “wept with a loud voice.” The sound was so mixed together that no one could tell the shouting from the weeping. Something good was finally starting, and some of the crowd couldn’t see it because they were comparing it to what used to be.

That’s the moment God speaks into through Zechariah. “For who hath despised the day of small things?” He asks it on purpose. Who decided small beginnings don’t count? God certainly didn’t.

Then He says “these seven shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel.” A plummet is a plumb line, a weight on a string that a builder holds up to make sure a wall is going up straight. Zerubbabel was leading the rebuilding. So the picture is the eyes of the Lord watching a man hold a plumb line over a small foundation, and rejoicing.

What’s something small in your life that you’ve been comparing to what used to be, or to what someone else has?

Maybe it’s a prayer life that’s only a few minutes in the car, or a friendship you’re trying to rebuild after a long time. Next to what you had before, it can feel embarrassing. God looks at a plumb line and sees a wall going up straight, and He’s glad. The day of small things is still a day He watches with joy.

Application: Name one small beginning in your life this week, and thank God for it instead of measuring it.

Prayer: Father, thank You that Your eyes are glad over small beginnings. Help me stop comparing what I have now to what used to be, and show me what You’re building here, one row at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing: If what you’re building looks small right now, He’s still watching it with joy.
