Faith for the Week is a moment to pause, reflect, and receive encouragement grounded in God's Word for the days ahead.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 (ASV)
"and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you; that ye may walk becomingly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing."
Reflection
When most of us hear the word ambition, we picture someone climbing, getting noticed and getting ahead. Paul uses that exact kind of word here.
In the ASV it reads "study to be quiet." The Greek word behind study means to love honor, or to make something your ambition. Paul's saying, make it your ambition to live a quiet life.
That's almost funny when you think about it. Be ambitious about being quiet. Put your energy into minding your own business and doing the work in front of you.
Notice what comes right before this. Paul tells them they already love each other well, and he urges them to abound more and more. Then he shows them how, and it's this quiet life. Loving people well often looks like taking care of what's yours, so you have something to give when they need you.
Some of the believers in Thessalonica had gotten stirred up. In his next letter, Paul says some of them weren't working at all and had become busybodies instead. They were busy, just not with their own work. Paul pointed them back to the ordinary. Take care of your own life, and work with your hands.
He tells them why in verse 12: "that ye may walk becomingly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing." People outside the church were watching. A steady, hardworking believer says something about Jesus that a lot of noise never could.
Where do you feel pressure to be seen, or to do more than what's actually yours to do?
Here's the freedom in this. A regular, faithful life is enough to honor God, and the Holy Spirit can use it to show people who Jesus is. Your quiet kind of ambition counts.
Application: When you feel pressure to prove something this week, ask whether it's actually yours to do. If it is, do it well. If it isn't, let it go.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You that a quiet, faithful life matters to You. Help me put my energy into what's actually mine to do, and let the way I live point people to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Closing: You don't have to be loud to be faithful. He sees the quiet work you're doing, and He's in it with you.
